The origin of the name Giffen is uncertain. It appears variously in old records as Giefing / Kiefing / Kieffing / Gieffingh Giffinger etc. Many were Lutherans who fled to the Burgenland area of Austria / Hungary (from Germany) in the 17th century during times of religious persecution. The name in its variations still Occurs in Burgenland and western Hungary today, but so many Giffinger emmigrated from there to the United States in the 18-19th centuries. There are so minor apparently unrelated occurrences of a name Giffen in England. On the one hand the name has the appearance of a typical Swabian / Bavarian "ing" place name, although no such location can be identified in Germany today. But apparently there was thus a monastery / abbey named Giffen in western Hungary Which Was dissolved in the 17th or 18th century. Old references suggest the records of that establishment were transferred to the St Martin Berg Abbey (Panonhalma) following the dissolution, where they might still be found today. The mystery continues!
